My name is Michele Hanson, co-founder of Seaworthy Naturals.

It may seem counterintuitive to feature a chemical in a blog about a natural skincare company. Actually, it was my extreme sensitivity to ISOTHIAZOLINONE that was the inspiration for Seaworthy Naturals.

After years of suffering from severe skin issues that impacted my comfort, my health and sapped my confidence. I now know the culprit, ISOTHIAZOLINONE.

Exactly what is ISOTHIAZOLINONE?

A biocide (preservative) found in many cosmetics and personal products such as moisturizers, foundations, powders, self-tanners, sunscreens, makeup removers, eye shadows, mascaras, shampoos, liquid soaps, hair conditioners, gels, baby wipes, etc. Also found in topical medicines, detergents, fabric softeners, cleansers, and pesticides.

Methylisothiazolinone~ 5-Chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one~ Kathon CG®~ Methylchloroisothiazolinone (INCI Name)~ MCI~ Methylisothiazolinone (INCI Name)~ MI ~2-Methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one

3 Reasons why you should care!

  1. In 2013, MI was named allergen of the year by the American Contact Dermatitis Society (ACDS) due to its growing recognition as a sensitizer and its increased use in cosmetics as a preservative.
  2. In 2016 the EU banned its use in leave-on products.
  3. It’s an insidious intruder that’s already in your house in a surprising number of products that you and your family use every day. Check your labels, you’ll be shocked!

After years of exposure to this chemical there is no safe exposure for me and many others with sensitive skin. Complete avoidance it the only answer. Easier said than done!  It was extremely difficult finding clean products for everything that I had to replace after my diagnosis.

Seaworthy Naturals was born out of a commitment to provide a source of chemical free, high quality products, made from all-natural ingredients. We make everything in small batches, right here in the U.S.A.  New products coming soon!
